Lactic acid, which is produced by beneficial bacteria known as lactobacilli, keeps the acidic environment at a pH of 3.5 to 4.5, preserving this layer. Inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and averting infection, fosters the growth of lactobacilli. The ideal pH range for vaginal bacteria is between 3.5 and 4.5.
